Monica's Pies, in Naples, New York, is situated four miles south of Canandaigua Lake nestled between the Bristol hills and surrounded by a country side of patchwork vineyards and farms as far as you can see.
Monica and her mother make all kinds of jams, jellies, conserves and gifts along with seasonal and holiday specialties and a vast array of different kinds of pies.
The entire region is noted for its wine making but, only Naples itself is noted for grape pies. Monica is one of many grape pie makers in the area, but unlike the other pie makers, her grape pies are available at her pie shop year round. Naples, New York is the grape pie capitol of the world!
Monica, born and raised in Naples, turned the Finger Lakes tradition and her love of baking into an incredibly successful business more than 25 years ago.
My parents, John and Katherine Clark were both teachers at Naples Central School.
They bought Hoyt’s Boat Livery located in a little settlement called Woodville on the South end of Canandaigua Lake, when I was three years old.
From then on my summers were spent at the lake and when I was old enough I worked at the Boat Livery and helped my mother in the small restaurant there.
It was there that I learned to cook and bake. My mother always made me feel comfortable and welcome in the kitchen. Mother’s pies were well known, even then: locals, fishermen, and boaters came for a piece of her wonderful pies.
The ground work was laid for what would come to be Monica’s Pies.
I started making grape pies in the fall of 1983 in my mother’s home, located in Woodville on busy Route 21, when Concord grapes were out of favor with the local wineries. It was a way to use the family’s grape crop and for me to stay at home with my young family.

The first couple of years my mother and I made our pies in her kitchen and sold them right outside the door at the roadside stand using “The Honor System”. Our motto was “Try before you buy”.
The pies were very popular and we soon outgrew the small kitchen and moved to the basement A.K.A. “Pie Kitchen”. This seemed to suffice until mother decided it was time to sell her home.
I did not want to give up the pie business, so Greg and I bought a four story barn on Route 21 not far from mother’s home and renovated it into a new pie kitchen, shop and an apartment for mother.
The move was a good one and not long after we moved into the “Pie Barn”, I received a call from The Food Network’s Food Finds Show (August 2002) who wanted to do a feature on our grape pies. Needless to say, national exposure was good for the grape pie business!
In addition to my pies I we have a variety of jams, jellies, conserves, seasonal specialties and gift items in the shop.
Monica’s Pies is a family owned and operated business. Mother is the “crust expert”, my husband, Greg, is in charge of the grapes, Aunt Betty peels apples , folds brochures and boxes, my kids help with folding boxes and running errands and I along with some very talented and dear friends make my signature pie fillings.
The grape is the unofficial trademark of Naples, New York and using the abundance of locally grown grapes to make pies has been a tradition since the 1960’s.
Today we bake 25 varieties of pies and sell 10,000-15,000 yearly. An endorsement with Pfaltzgraff for their Perfect Pie Plate (Spring 2004)! The Food Network Show still plays periodically.
The New York Times (November 2004) and Better Homes and Gardens (June 2005), and Country Discoveries (Sept/Oct 2002) have featured articles about us. All of this wonderful exposure keeps us all very busy.
